| Firebird Transam Type K |
| At the begining, the project
" STANDARD K " was born in the engineering and design departments from the
GENERAL MOTOR' S Multipurpose. As its name indicates
it, this department of style works for all the components of the G.M. on projects more " show cars " that intended for the
production. Dave Holls, person in charge of this studio, had, as of the output of the
FIREBIRD 70, begun the study from the transformation of the FIREBIRD into "sportive
station wagon', to compensate for the low useful volume of this type of vehicle. Several tests with transformation into polyester were
conclusive. The final development and the setting in production with a number inevitably
limited are an industrial headache. Mitchell, person in charge of PONTIAC, take contact
with PININFARINA for a agreement of production (transformation be more right...) of FIREBIRD Type K on a base of TRANS AM.
PININFARINA is very interested by this Américano-Italian project and begin the 1st part
of contract for the realization of two prototypes of preproduction on base TRANS AM 77,
with condition that they be entirely in metal and of a cost of return allow a public price
of approximately $ 10000. Already i n 1953 , Harley Earl presented a concept-car going in the direction of a " sporting utility ", with the CHEVROLET CORVETTE "NOMAD ", in front of CORVETTE and with the back of station-wagon. CHEVROLET followed besides closely the project "Type K " PONTIAC, ready to launch the CAMARO in the adventure. The setting in common production, reducing the prime cost, was studied but ran up because of the manufacturers.Indeed, the FIREBIRD and the CAMARO are characterized by the form of the door on the level from the lock. The joint realization of the transformation would have required that one of the manufacturers is standardized on the other. None wanted to make this concession! |
